The current iteration of the Thar will soon bid farewell as it doesn't comply with upcoming crash test and safety norms. But before saying goodbye, Mahindra will launch a special edition of the SUV called the Thar Signature Edition. The specifications of the Signature Edition have been leaked and it reveals that it will get a host of cosmetic updates.

For starters, the Signature Edition gets a new 'Aquamarine' blue paint option as seen on the Marazzo MPV. The front grille is finished in black and while the centre portion of the bumper gets a silver finish for a contrast effect. At the side, the Thar Signature Edition gets the previous-gen Scorpio's set of 16-inch alloy wheels. It also gets body decals below the doors and 'Thar 700' badging with Anand Mahindra's signature embossed in it on the front fenders.

Changes on the inside are limited to a black leatherette seat cover with the 'Thar' name embossed on it. It will continue to get a three-pod instrument console with a rev counter, air conditioner and a 12V charging socket as standard equipment.

The Mahindra Thar Signature Edition will only be sold with the BS4-compliant 2.5-litre CRDe engine. It churns out 107PS of power and 247Nm of torque and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It also comes with a Borgwarner transfer case with a provision to shift to low range. A locking rear diff is also present to make the most of your adventure trips. Mahindra has already, keeping in mind the upcoming safety and BS6 emission norms.

The Thar Signature Edition will be limited to 700 units. It is expected to hit showrooms soon. Considering the number of upgrades it gets, we expect it to be priced at a premium of Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 compared to the standard SUV, which retails at Rs 9.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

While the current-gen Thar will bid farewell soon, Mahindra is busy at work developing the recently. The next-gen Thar will be larger than the current version and will be underpinned by a new platform. It will also get BS6-compliant engines and will come mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The next-gen Thar is expected to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.
