Jaguar Readying Electric Platform For Next-Gen XJ

  • The MLA is expected to provide a more adaptable platform for Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.
  • EVs on the new platform to get 90.2kWh batteries whereas PHEVs will feature 13.1kWh batteries.
  • EVs to get a range of up to 470km while plug-in hybrids could cover up to 48km.
  • The MLA will be first introduced in the next-gen Jaguar XJ followed by the next-gen Range Rover.

is set to introduce a new modular platform that will underpin all its sedans and SUVs in the near future. Called the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), this platform is also expected to form the basis for all upcoming electric and hybrid powertrains.

Jaguar Land Rover plans to use the MLA platform to replace up to five different platforms that are used currently, which should help the company save costs. However, this adaptable platform may result in a drawback with the ICE and electric options having trade-offs that may affect cabin utilisation for the platform.

The electric cars set to be based on this platform will get 90.2kWh batteries that are capable of giving an electric range of upto 470km according to Jaguar Land Rover. On the other hand, their plug-in hybrid models will use a 13.1kWh battery that will give an electric-only range of just over 48km.

The first vehicle that will incorporate this new platform is the next-gen Jaguar. The Jaguar XJ will be introduced initially as an all-electric model, with a six-cylinder ICE petrol variant expected to be introduced later on. The new XJ is expected to compete with the likes of the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT.

The new XJ is expected to be unveiled next year. The EV sedan is likely to be produced at Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull plant alongside other MLA-based vehicles. With the current-gen XJ set to be discontinued next month, it could be the last XJ to be produced at the Castle Bromwich plant.

The next vehicle that is set to be introduced under this platform is the next-generation will be based on the MLA platform with hybrid variant options. An all-electric variant could also be in the pipeline in the future.

In the end, the new MLA platform should be marked as Jaguar Land Rover's initial push towards an all-electric and plug-in hybrid portfolio that began with the I-Pace.
